·         It takes years for this disease to develop. It may be present since early ages but only detected when it has grown big and the average of detection is around 60 years.

·         Consumption of alcohol in excessive amount can lead to cancer of lung, kidney, throat, breast etc.

·         Although there is no proof, but some of the substances present in the environment are considered as cancer causing substances. Some of them are aflatoxins, arsenic, asbestos etc.

·         Some of the other factors include hormones, diet, obesity, sunlight, infectious agents etc.

Oncology treatment in India is done with the help of different methods. They are explained below

·         Surgery
It is one of the oldest methods of treating this disease. But it can be used in diagnosing cancer too. For many types of cancer, biopsy is the most definitive way of diagnosing cancer. Some part of the suspicious tissue is removed and studied under the microscope. Sometimes, entire tumor cannot be removed because it will cause too much damage. Debulking is used to remove as much of the tumor as possible.

·         Radiation therapy
It is the use of high energy X-rays to kill and destroy cancer cells. It also slows down the growth of cancer cells without affecting the nearby healthy cells. In many cases, it is the primary treatment course. In others, it can be used before or after surgery or chemotherapy. Around half the people with cancer receive this treatment at one point or another.

Our mouth is one of the critical areas where you can develop this disease. It comes under the category of oral cancers. It encompasses all the cancers that have the ability to affect any part of the mouth. It can be seen on lips, gums, tongue, roof and floor of the mouth etc. Some of the common symptoms observed are as follows –

·         A sore that bleeds and does not heal.
·         Difficulty and pain in chewing and swallowing.
·         Poorly fitting dentures.
·         Stiffness and pain in jaw.

Tobacco and alcohol consumption are two of the biggest risk factors. Most of the cases are due to these only. Keeping away from both of them can be helpful. Oral cancer treatment in India depends on the body part and the extent. Surgery is mainly needed if cancer has spread to the lymph nodes in the neck. In case of early-stage mouth cancer, radiation therapy is the only treatment option. It can also be combined with surgery or chemotherapy. Then there is targeted drug therapy in which Erbitux is given to treat head and neck cancers.
